Androgyny Image

Christ is shown here on a postcard immediately following his immolation as he is being handed by Mary to angels. His body shows the signs of the torture and death by starvation and exposure on the cross, but his assured countenance tells of his forthcoming reincarnation as an immortal deity. Christ never conformed to the typical male gender role, resisting procreation in life even in the face of temptation. After death, however, his image became further distanced from the idea of gender specificity. Following his rise, he ceased to be a man, instead becoming a symbol of love and forgiveness, qualities which could be equally male or female. This particular image points to this possible duality.
